QUESTION:

Can I use tenofovir + AZT in case of FTC or 3TC resistance? thanks


  

RESPONSE FROM:   

    Yes. These two drugs can be used together along with other HIV meds as part of salvage regimen. I would still consider use of FTC or 3TC even if there is resistance to these meds as there are some data to suggest that FTC/3TC resistant virus is handicapped and can not function as well as virus without this resistance.

    Another reason that AZT and tenofovir may be an attractive combo is that if there is AZT resistance present, continued use of AZT may prevent tenofovir resistance. This is because the virus seems to have a difficult time being resistant to both AZT and tenofovir (due to structural limitations of the virus).
