QUESTION:

Hello:

Are there specific symptomology/indicators that definitively lead to a change in diagnosis from HIV to AIDS? What becomes more important at that stage of the illness, in terms of nutrition and management? Thank you?


  

RESPONSE FROM:   

    There are several grading systems for HIV disease, including those from the Centers for Diseaes Control and the World Health Organization. The most widely used here in the US is the CDC's.

    Among all patients with HIV having adequate nutrition is always important, however, once immune decline has reached health-threatening levels, then it's the work of antiretroviral medications (not nutritional supplements) to prevent further decline and restore health. BY
