PC pneumonitis

QUESTION:

male 46 years, positive since 1990, in triple antiretroviral scheme, hospitalized 3 months ago with neumonitis by PNCarinni. Got treatment with trimetoprim and sulfamtx for 2 months, now asymthomatic for 1 month. Total lymphocites 1183, CD19 154, CD4 in 308, CD3 899, CD8 592.NK 130. Esphyrometry 95% O2. We dont have reactive for viral load at the hosp right now. How long do you recomend to continue profilaxis with bactrim in low doses? Thanks for your help

    Thank you for your post.

    We typically treat pneumocystic pneumonia for 3 weeks, using trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrimoxazole). Secondary prophylaxis with single strength TMP/SMX daily or double strength 3-times weekly is continued until the CD4 count is reproducibly above 200 (15%).
