QUESTION:

I found out 2 yrs ao that my childs' father is Hiv positive and has been for 6-8 years and i have had two kids since then and I am not infected. I keep myself tested every year and it is always negative. So, my answer is why am I not infected and have yall ever had cases where it take over 6 months to show. Please let me know thanks.

RESPONSE FROM:

This is an excellent question that deserves to be answered in thebody.com site rather than this one. You are not infected. The HIV antibody test will not become positive more than 6 months after exposure.

Why you were not infected could depend on a number of factors. Some people have very low levels of HIV in their genital secretions and are therefore less likely to pass the virus on to partners. In addition, there are many people who are relatively resistant to HIV infection. This has to do mostly with these individual's inability to make a protein that HIV needs to enter the T-cell. If you make less than the normal amount of this protein (and especially none) then you are less likely to be infected after exposure to HIV than someone with a normal amount of this protein. The protection, however, is not absolute and you can still become HIV infected even without this protein - so you still need to be safe.

Of course, there is always luck. You may have just been very fortunate.
