atazanavir

QUESTION:

whats its your opinion abaut the combination of atazanvir with lamivudina-zidovudina

    ZDV/3TC (zidovudina/lamivudina, Combivir) and atazanavir (Reyataz) should be a potent three drug regimen for HIV. In the US, we have largely adopted ritonavir-boosted PIs over unboosted PIs because of increased potency and an improved resistance profile. For this reason, most of my colleagues would use ritonavir 100 mg qd with atazanavir 300 mg qd for most patients.

    That said, there may be reasons why (cost, side effects) that limit the use of ritonavir. In this instance, once-daily atazanavir with 2 NRTIs should be a reasonable alternative. BY
