QUESTION:

Hi! I know this mightsound dumb but jus wanted to ask as to why is ARV regime discontinued if the pt doesnt take it for 3 months or less? Does this mean that the pt deelops resistence to it? THank you.

    Thanks for your post.

    I'm not really sure what your question is-- patients who are unable to be adherent to their treatments (usually defined at ~90-95% of doses) are at significantly greater risk of developing drug resistance. Patients who have not been taking their medications for a long period should have the reasons for the discontinuation evaluated (was it side effects, dosing frequency, cost?) before simply resuming the "old" treatment. In the absence of documented drug resistance (or virologic failure) while taking medications, one can resume the previous regimen with close clinical and lab monitoring.
